Early Life

Karen Carpenter was born on March 2, 1950, in New Haven, Connecticut. Harold Bertram Carpenter (father) and Agnes Reuwer (mother) were her parents (mother). In addition, she has an American musician brother named Richard Lynn Carpenter. She and her family relocated to Downey, California, when she was 13 years old.

She did not enjoy playing the glockenspiel, though, and later picked up drumming as a result of her buddy Frankie Chavez’s drumming ability.

She persuaded her parents to purchase a $300 ‘Ludwig set’ for her. After that, she began training with Frankie Chavez. Karen picked up the technique of drumming quickly and was able to play some really difficult time signatures, such as the 5/4 in Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five.”

Karen enrolled at California State University, Long Beach, as a music major after graduating in 1967. She also sang with her brother Richard Carpenter in the campus choir. Frank Pooler, the choir’s director, was so taken with her voice that he gave her singing lessons and helped her build a three-octave range.
