Philomena Canavan Obituary, Death Cause – Derrylaughan Kevin Barry’s GAC are saddened to learn of the death of our former Committee Member, Philomena Canavan. Mother of Frances, Bosco, former players John, Joseph, Plunkett, Patricia, Jacqueline & Cormac. Philomena was also a Grandmother and Great Grandmother of many of our present and past Youth Players who have given great service to our Club. Philomena and her late husband Joe were dedicated workers for our Club during the 70’s and 80’s when we were striving to gather funds to develop our present facilities at Washingbay. Their efforts will never be forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Canavan family circle at this sad time.She had suffered four separate gunshot wounds two in the torso, one in the arm, and one in the head. According to details of the crime scene, the killer may have spent some time after the shooting to search for shell casings of the bullets that fatally wounded her, retrieving all but one shell case and one bullet from the back of a chair in the reception area. Police found these items and were able to determine that the weapon used was a 9 mm handgun, but were subsequently unable to recover the murder weapon itself.
